A domain transfer means changing the registrar, that is, the company where the domain is managed. It is not directly related to where your website runs. You can transfer the domain and the hosting separately or at the same time. When ordering, you can choose that the domain is already taken and you want to transfer it to us, and we will get back to you with the procedure.
Transferring to us: what to prepare
- The domain is active and its expiry date is not approaching. You can find out how this is handled in the article Domain expiration.
- Unlock the domain at your current registrar (some domains have a lock against transfers).
- Request the transfer code (sometimes called an AUTH code, transfer code or domain password) and verify the email of the holder's contact. Confirmations may be sent to this address.
- Place an order with us and choose the domain transfer. We will confirm the procedure to you.
Keeping your website online
- First upload the website and the database to the new hosting.
- Preview the website before switching the domain: Viewing your website before the DNS change.
- Then switch the DNS to the new hosting: Pointing a domain.
- Do not forget to move your emails too (mailboxes and their contents).
How long the transfer takes
For .cz domains, a registrar change usually takes in the order of days. For generic extensions (.com, .net, .org) a transfer can take several days, and there is a restriction that a freshly registered or transferred domain cannot be transferred again right away (typically for 60 days).
Transferring away from us
If you want to transfer the domain elsewhere, write to us. We will help you with unlocking and the code. Before you cancel the service, transfer the domain and the website first so there is no downtime. You will find details about termination in the article Billing period, renewal and termination.
