If you are moving a website to us from another provider, you can preview it before the DNS change and make sure everything works as expected.
Pointing via the hosts file
DNS records can be easily “bypassed” by editing the hosts file, whose entries take precedence over DNS records. Just add a line in the following form at the end of the file:
1.2.3.4 www.vasedomena.tld
where 1.2.3.4 is the IP address of our web server (188.165.206.51).
If you want to point several subdomains, add a separate line for each of them.
After testing, do not forget to remove the entries from hosts.
MacOSX
In the Terminal application, enter sudo pico /private/etc/hosts (instead of pico you can use any other editor, e.g. vim). You will then be asked for the password of one of the computer's administrators. After the editor opens, add the line above at the end.
To save in pico, press F2, confirm with “y”, and press ctrl+x to exit the editor.
Linux/Unix
On the command line as root (or use sudo), enter pico /etc/hosts (instead of pico you can use any other editor, e.g. vim). After the editor opens, add the line above at the end. To save in pico, press F2, confirm with “y”, and press ctrl+x to exit the editor.
If you do not have sudo configured, you can use the command su -c "pico /etc/hosts".
MS Windows
In a text editor (notepad.exe), open the file C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts. The location of the file may differ depending on the location of the “windows” directory or the Windows version. In the editor, add the line above at the end and save.
