A protocol that encrypts the connection between the browser and the server and forms the basis of HTTPS. It used to be called SSL; today TLS is used, and the name SSL survives only for historical reasons. The safe versions are TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3; the older TLS 1.0 and 1.1 are broken and should be turned off. See also SSL certificate.
