Search engines

‹ Glossary

Internet search engines are applications used to search for relevant information on the internet. Similar to search engines are directories, which can also be searched.

In search engines we do not have to search only for text; today we can also search for images or other media files. Search engines mostly perform so-called full-text search.

Use

The user enters a keyword or phrase in the search box. They click the search button, and after searching its database the search engine displays relevant results in the form of links. Searching in a search engine differs from searching in directories. Directories search stored entries that someone had added to the directory. Search engines, by contrast, have automated robots that crawl all web pages and store them in a so-called index. This method is called indexing.

With search engines, the order in which results are listed is very important. The higher a link is placed, the more likely a visitor will reach your website. The position of pages in search engines is affected by a number of factors (on-page and off-page factors). Pages are constantly evaluated on the basis of these factors, and the search engine assigns them a certain value accordingly. The most important thing for the placement of links in search engines is to have well-executed search engine optimization (SEO).
