JavaScript

‹ Glossary

This scripting language was originally meant to be an add-on to web pages. It was supposed to make them dynamic and bring them to life with various moving elements.

In recent years, however, it has become an integral part of most websites, because it lets you create good-looking photo galleries, dynamic menus and special effects that no other language allows. Other scripting technologies are also derived from this language, such as AJAX, the jQuery framework and so on.

The language can be written in several styles. It can be placed directly in the file together with the HTML code, or attached to the web page as an external file.

Advantages and disadvantages

A big advantage is that this language is not limited by the operating system and can therefore run on any system, such as Windows, Linux, Unix and others.

Another advantage is that it is processed on the client side and so does not burden the web hosting server on which the website is stored. On the other hand, this can also be a disadvantage if the user turns off JavaScript in the browser. In that case, for example, they may not be able to reach some features of the website.
